Batman: Year One
Buy on Amazon →The definitive Batman origin story. Noir, brutal, perfect.
Why it matters
Miller and Mazzucchelli strip Batman back to basics. The parallel stories of Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon arriving in Gotham remain the gold standard for comic book storytelling. Mazzucchelli's art does as much work as the script -- tight panels, hard light, a city that has given up on itself. The Gordon subplot is arguably more interesting than Bruce Wayne's. A masterclass in showing character through action rather than exposition.
Mike's Take (Audio)
Gotham City. Clean shafts of concrete and snowy rooftops. The work of men who died generations ago. From here, it looks like an achievement. From here, you can't see the enemy.
